Carmike 10, Huntsville
Silver Projection Quality Award 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003
This theatre opened on March 5, 1998 as Huntsville's first theatre
with digital sound, stadium seating, and adjustable screen masking
in all auditoriums.
The first night (a Thursday),
the theatre
ran a bunch of movies, all $1.00 each, all starting at 8:00.
The next night, on Friday, March 6, 1998, the theatre began normal business
showing new movies.
Click here if you are interested in seeing the
movies that ran at this theatre on the first two nights of business.
This theatre has Christie projectors and Strong platters.
Some previous managers: Clayton Snell (1998), Eric Qualls (1999), Julius Pirie Scott (1999-2000), Debra Caldwell (2000-2001), Rick Walker (2001-2002) [current manager]
When this theatre opened, it was Carmike's first theatre in Huntsville since
the University 6 had closed back in May of 1996. Although many older Carmike
facilities have not been well-maintained, the Carmike 10 has been well-kept
so far. This is the first theatre in Huntsville actually built by Carmike.
The Carmike 10 uses Strong platters and Christie projectors. Four auditoriums,
numbers 1, 5, 6, and 10, are THX-certified. Auditoriums 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10
have DTS and auditoriums 4, 5, 6, and 7 have Dolby Digital sound.
Screens have a slight curvature and range from 10 feet in height in smaller
auditoriums to 15 feet in height in the larger auditoriums. Adjustable
side screen masking is used in all auditoriums.
Seats at the Carmike 10 have high backs and are more comfortable for long
movies than seats at most other theatres.
Presentation quality at this theatre has been good overall so far. So far,
this theatre has had the best presentation quality in Huntsville, outscored
only by the Regal River Oaks Cinema 8 in Decatur, AL.

Without a Paddle
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.9576)
- Image comments: Masking was set to scope before movie started. When the projector was started, the previews and movie were in scope format, projected with the correct lens and aperture, but the masking moved in to the flat position, with the image going on the curtains. This was corrected after I went out to notify the staff. (-1)
- Audio comments: DTS.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 30 feet. Screen width: 27 feet (scope mode). Scope film (super35).

- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: DTS/THX.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (flat mode). Flat film. One-perf out-of-frame splice in previews, but an operator corrected the framing immediately when it occurred.

Troy
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.8694)
- Image comments: One trailer spliced in one perforation out of frame in previews. (-1) Image quality during movie was excellent.
- Audio comments: DTS/THX. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 31 feet (scope mode), 24 feet (flat mode). Scope film, filmed in Super 35. Only one commercial was shown (a Marines advertisement) before the previews, which was a nice break from the 10 that are often shown before previews these days.

Big Fish
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.7979)
- Image comments: Uneven aperture shadow on top edge of screen. (-1)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (flat mode). Flat film. 4 commercials were shown before the previews.

Looney Tunes: Back in Action
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.7521)
- Image comments: Approximately 4 inches of black across bottom of screen not due to aperture shadow, but due to black space at bottom of frame due to slight misframing. (-1)
- Audio comments: Dolby Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 30 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (scope mode), 19 feet (flat mode). Scope film (super35 with animation added). Projector started 16 minutes late. (-1). The likely cause for the lateness is that I verified that of the 7 people in the auditorium, 5 of the stubs (and probably all 7) said 7:15 although we all had asked for the 7:30. The computer showed no buyers for tickets to the 7:30, so it was not started until a customer went to the lobby to inform them that 7 customers were in auditorium 4 for the 7:30. When projector was started, the policy trailer, and one movie trailer was played, then the movie started, a rarity nowadays. (No commercials! That's a good thing! It appears that Carmike has not followed Regal in showing an excessive number of rolling stock commercials before the previews.) Screen scope aspect ratio was no wider than 2.22:1 (a 7.1 percent deviation from the standard 2.39:1, which is within the 10 percent tolerance I allow).

Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.7000)
- Image comments: Image went beyond left edge of screen past black masking onto drapes and image lacked 1 foot reaching right edge of screen. (-3)
- Audio comments: DTS/THX. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 31 feet (scope mode), 24 feet (flat mode). Scope film, filmed with an anamorphic lens. The credits contain many former child TV stars from long ago singing a song. When projector was started, just one trailer was played, then the movie started, a rarity nowadays.

- Image comments: Top edge had slight aperture shadow fading on parts of the edge. (-1)

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.6493)
- Image comments: Flat Carmike policy trailer shown with scope lens and aperture. (-1) Slight shutter ghosting at bottom of image. (-1)
- Audio comments: THX/DTS. Excellent during movie. When flat to scope transition occurred during previews, audio was totally lost for all of the following two movie previews and half of a third one. (-1)
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 31 feet (scope mode), 24 feet (flat mode). Scope film, filmed in Super35.

Dumb and Dumberer
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.6479)
- Image comments: 4 flat trailers were played with scope lens and aperture, making everything look twice as wide as it should have been and causing the image to often not fill the screen vertically. The Dolby Digital trailer was a scope one, played with flat lens and aperture, with analog sound. The THX trailer was covered with black dirt specks and dropped out of digital sound at the end. The projector stopped twice during the previews: once seconds after being started initially, and once during the trailer that came attached to reel 1 of the movie. (-2) The movie itself was presented perfectly. Please note that it is my policy to not deduct more than 2 points for problems during previews that do not affect the movie itself.
- Audio comments: Dolby Digital/THX. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 42 feet. Screen width: 27 feet (flat mode). Flat film. This show was supposed to start at 7:30, but the projector was started at 7:14. Conflicting information concerning showtimes was given. The lighted poster signs had 7:10 as the only 7ish showtime, while the LED panel at the box office had 7:00 and 7:30 as the showtimes. I believe the projector operator thought that 7:10 was the time to start the machine instead of 7:30. Nobody arrived late, so nobody missed the beginning of the movie as a result. The movie itself did not start until 7:30.

Bruce Almighty
- Grade: -4 (Current grade weight : 0.6299)
- Image comments: Focus slightly off in parts of image (noticeably soft in center and left of center). (-1).
- Audio comments: THX/DTS. There were two distracting audio problems, one of which was not the theatre's fault. DTS Sound began cutting out around halfway through the movie. Often, every few seconds, the DTS would kick back in, then drop out again, resulting in very noticeable shifts in the sound field. This was caused by defective reels. Many theatres have experienced problems with DTS on reel 3 of this movie (and many have also had problems with reel 4). Most of the second half of movie played in analog with mild but distracting distortion of the talking under water variety, due to the analog sound not being setup properly. (-3) There was originally an additional -4 deduction for the digital dropout, but I had to remove it due to the problem being with the print received rather than the theatre's equipment.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (flat mode). Flat film.
- Problem codes: f1 d3
2003/03/24 19:15, Auditorium 1
Bringing Down the House
- Grade: -8 (Current grade weight : 0.5847)
- Image comments: 1 to 2 feet of black at right side of screen. Image off-center 2 feet to left (center of film image projected 2 feet left of screen center), which was quite distracting. Slight shadow of left edge from tape on port glass to compensate for the off-centeredness. Slight fading on top edge. Approximately 2 feet of the leftmost side of image was lost due to off-centeredness. (-7 for all alignment problems combined). DTS and THX trailers were flat versions shown with the scope lens and aperture. (-1)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (flat mode), 31 feet (scope mode). Scope film, filmed in super35.
- Problem codes: A7 R1

Old School
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.5771)
- Image comments: At flat to scope changeover during previews, aperture plate did not move to proper position, stopping halfway between flat and scope position with a vertical blank area on the screen with the two apertures visible on each side (scope on left, flat on right) with the soundtrack projected at the left front corner of the auditorium. (-1) Fading on top right edge. (-1).
- Audio comments: DTS. Exccellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 30 feet. Screen width: 20 feet (flat mode), 24 feet (scope mode). Scope film, filmed in super35 with Clairmont lenses.

Daredevil
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.5576)
- Image comments: At flat to scope changeover during previews, aperture plate did not move to proper position. Soundtrack and DTS time code were projected on wall to left of screen while the right 4 feet of the screen was black. This was fixed 5 to 10 minutes into the previews. This problem has been occurring on scope films in this auditoriums since August 2001. (-2)
- Audio comments: Dolby Digital. THX. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 42 feet. Screen width: 27 feet (flat mode). 35 feet (scope mode). Scope film (super35).

- Grade: -4 (Current grade weight : 0.2778)
- Image comments: At scope changeover, aperture plate was out of alignment, showing the soundtrack area of the film on the left side of the image and blocking the right portion of the image (one foot to a foot and a half). This was fixed before the movie started, but the top and right edges had several inches of fading. (-4).

- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.2604)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: THX/DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (flat mode). Flat film, animated, hard matted print. This was the first night that this movie was shown with Pixar's outtakes in the credits. I had intended to see Novocaine, but that movie did not show in Huntsville. It got pulled because it was too mature for Huntsville. Another note: If you were in a theatre and the floor shook at 7:08, it was likely not the bass from the sound system, but an earthquake (3.9 magnitude) 20 miles east of Huntsville. I felt it when it happened.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.1889)
- Image comments: After scope changeover, aperture plate was out alignment, showing the soundtrack area of the film on the left side of the image and blocking part of the right portion of the image. This was fixed before the movie started, but the alignment was still off for most of the movie, showing 6 inches of black on the left side of screen. It was later adjusted near the end of the movie, showing a slight bit of black on the right side of the screen. (-2)
- Audio comments: Dolby Digital/THX. Two of the reels of the movie did not play in digital and played in analog. These two reels had no Dolby Digital soundtrack, so it was not the theatre's fault, so therefore, I cannot deduct for this problem, although it was distracting.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 42 feet. Screen width: 27 feet (flat mode), 34 feet (scope mode). Scope film, filmed in super35.

This movie was in the flat format. 60 to 70 percent of the people in this showing were small children, so I expected a lot of noise, crying, and other distractions. I was impressed, and truly amazed at the good behavior of this audience. I don't think I heard any stray talking or babies crying a single time during the movie. The stray noise and distraction level was as good as any showing I've attended with a nearly full auditorium. If this showing did not sell out, it came really close. It was sad to see that two different reels of this print had damage, and this was the first showing of this film at this theatre.

Audience was surprisingly quiet and unresponsive, laughing and clapping very little, except for the 3 guys to my immediate right, who had to talk and giggle about every single thing all through the movie every few seconds. I arrived at the theatre around 10:15 with TV news crews present and a long line outside the building, and 5 minutes later, we were let into the auditoriums. - Other comments: Flat film: screen width 18 feet, auditorium width 30 feet. This film looked very grainy. The graininess was so bad in some scenes that it called attention to itself, but, of course, this is not the theatre's fault. Film was very tightly cropped, but it did not appear to be due to improper framing on the theatre's part. On the internet, I got some comments from another projectionist who noticed that horrendous framing and it was due to the poor cinematography, and the super-16 to 35mm blowup, and it was not the fault of the theatre.

- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Focus seemed off by a slight bit. I have read several sources stating that the soft, somewhat unfocused effect was intentional in this movie. Also, this was a super-35-filmed movie, and super-35 movies are grainier and not as sharp as Panavision and Cinemascope movies, anyway. This is not the theatre's fault.
