Regal Hollywood 18, Huntsville
This theatre opened on July 15, 1994 as the Cobb Hollywood 16, at 3312
Memorial Parkway, SW.
Click here if you're interested in seeing
the movies that played here on opening night. Regal took over this
theatre when it took over Cobb on August 1, 1997. Some previous managers:
Hadon Ware (1995-1996), Matt Montague (1997).
This facility has stadium seating in all auditoriums and has digital sound
in all auditoriums. The entire upgrade was completed as of January 28, 2000.
A very important upgrade was made to this facility during the November 2002 to March 2003 time period. When built,
Cobb built only 4 screens with adjustable masking to handle both the flat and
scope formats. Regal added two screens that had adjustable masking, but 12
screens still had 1.85:1-only screens, on which scope movies (2.39:1) lost
23 percent of the image on the sides. The problem has being remedied.
Now both the flat and scope movie
formats can be shown in all auditoriums without image loss.
The auditoriums were renumbered at this location
during the July to October 1999 time period due to the addition of two
new auditoriums. The renumbering went as follows: 1 remained 1, 2 was new,
2-15 were renumbered 3-16, 17 was new, and 16 became 18.

King Arthur
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.9187)
- Image comments: Left edge had significant aperture shadow, as did parts of the upper and right edges. (-2)
- Audio comments: Digital. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 48 feet. Screen width: 40 feet (scope mode). The preshow digital projector for advertising was not aligned with the screen. The image lacked about a foot reaching the left, bottom, and right sides of the screen in flat mode. I'm debating on whether to include presentation defects from the digital motion picture material in the ratings. Scope film, with super35 origination.

Troy
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.9021)
- Image comments: Left edge of image had shadows from uneven aperture plate edge. (-1)
- Audio comments: Unsure if digital or optical. Noticeable hiss in audio (-1).
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 25 feet. Adjustable top and bottom masking. A digital projector was used to show 20 minutes of commercials without sound (thankfully). From the front row of the stadium section, the pixels in the digital projection were very obvious -- distractingly so! When the film projector was started, there were no commercials, just previews and the movie. The film image looked superior to the digital projector. The use of the digital projector would be appear much more professional if a much higher resolution were used, and if it were matched to the aspect ratio of the movie being shown, especially in the smaller auditoriums where the screen has to shrink vertically for scope movies.

Shrek 2
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.8910)
- Image comments: Perfect
- Audio comments: Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (common width system with top/bottom masking). Flat animated film. A digitally-projected 20 minutes of commercials called The 20 was showing in this auditorium 20 minutes before the advertised show time. When the film projector was started, there were no commercials -- just previews. I found the audio to be a bit too loud during The 20, and wish a lower volume level would be used for those commercials than is used for the movie.

Win a Date With Tad Hamilton
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.8090)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: Digital. Sound OK during movie, but during all pre-movie material, sound was very faint and distorted. It was likely playing in analog in a very miscalibrated system. (-2)
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (adjustable top masking). Scope film, filmed in super35. 4 commericals were played before the previews started, the most that I consider to be a reasonable number.

Love Actually
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.7590)
- Image comments: On top edge, top right has aperture shadow. At bottom of left edge, there was a small portion that went onto the drapes (appeared to be a small chunk out of the aperture plate there). (-1)
- Audio comments: Digital. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 49 feet. Screen width: 39 feet (scope mode). Scope film, filmed in super35. Adjustable side masking. 6 commericals were played before the previews started.

Scary Movie 3
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.7431)
- Image comments: Image faded out before reaching bottom of screen (6 inches to a foot from bottom edge). (-2) Slight shutter ghosting in lower half of image. (-1)
- Audio comments: Digital. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 46 feet. Screen width: 30 feet (flat mode). Flat film. Adjustable side masking. Reel one of this print was defective. The image fluctuated between normal and having a yellowish tint every few seconds all the way through reel one, especially on the left edge of the image. The audio was affected as well. Part of reel one did not play in digital. Note that I'm not deducting for this since any theatre playing this reel would have the same problem. 10 commercials were played before the previews started. Evidentally, this is a new trend at Regal Theatres, and maybe others. There was Regal Crown Club, video game commercials, a set of 3 Coke commercials, and others. This is a disturbing trend that is probably here to stay.

- Audio comments: Digital. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 25 feet. Scope film, filmed in super35. Screen had adjustable top and bottom masking.

Bruce Almighty
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.6847)
- Image comments: Right edge went beyond right black masking onto drapes -- also, dark area at upper right corner. (-1) Lenses or port glass needed cleaning. Spots were visible in upper left corner of image and blooming of bright areas into dark areas was noticed, hurting contrast. (-1)
- Audio comments: Digital. Some brief digital dropouts occurred during this movie, but there were widespread occurrences of this problem with this particular movie all over the country, so I'm not deducting for it.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 25 feet. Flat film. There are some outtakes in the credits.

Adaptation
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.5569)
- Image comments: Misframed slightly, causing many of the text captions placed at the bottom of the screen to be partially or totally cut off, making them unreadable.
- Audio comments: Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 31 feet. Screen width: 27 feet. Flat film. There was tape on the port glass forming a rectangle to keep the image from going beyond the screen borders, since this screen is slightly smaller in flat mode than it used to be due to the installation (in progress) of adjustable top masking. A loose ceiling tile in the middle of the auditorium looked as if it were about to fall.

- Grade: -17 (Current grade weight : 0.5389)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: Digital. Volume was too low, making dialogue hard to understand at times in this crowded auditorium. (-2)
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 32 feet. Screen width: 27.5 feet (flat mode). Flat film. Projector was started at 7:00 instead of 7:30. The projector was stopped at 7:15 and instead of restarting from the beginning, the film was restarted from where it left off, 10 minutes into the movie. The majority of the people in this nearly-sold-out auditorium did not get to see the first 10 minutes of the movie because of this. (-15)

X-Men
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Slight fading on left edge. (-1) Right portion of top edge did not reach screen top, and it was difficult to determine if it was due to the masking not being horizontal (curving upward) or due to a projector alignment problem. (-1)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent. This was some of the best directional surround sound I've ever heard.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 49 feet in front. Screen width: approximately 40 feet in scope mode. Movie was filmed in Panavision. This was a sold-out showing and the audience was great except two idiots who brought crying babies and one idiot with a cell phone that went off for about 30 seconds before he turned it off.

Chicken Run
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: All edges fine except left edge. There was 2 feet of black between the left side of image and left masking. (-3) Masking needs to be set properly and projector aimed correctly.
- Audio comments: Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width (flat mode): 30 feet. Image width (flat): 28 feet. Flat film, claymation. Ticket stub indicated auditorium 18 at time 19:20. The showing was at 20:00 (the time my friend and I asked for) in auditorium 1.

Return to Me
- Grade: -7 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Slight fading on right and bottom. (-2)
- Audio comments: Digital. Audio was very surround heavy. From the stadium seats, all audio seems to come from the surround speakers (even the main dialogue) and not from the front. When I walked to the front section of the auditorium, the front speakers could be heard. In any case, this audio system was not calibrated properly. In addition, bass sounds from the adjacent auditoriums could be heard loudly and clearly and were quite distracting at times. At least the sound was clear and the dialogue was understandable with no difficulty. (-5)
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 32 feet. Screen width: 30 feet. There is no adjustable masking in this auditorium.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent focus and clarity (as good as I've seen). This print that the theatre received had a lot of dirt accumulation in places, expecially around splice points.
- Audio comments: One of the digital formats. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium: 40 feet wide. Screen width: 34 feet wide in scope mode. Scope print filmed in scope format.

- Image comments: Right edge faded before reaching right edge of screen. (-1)
- Audio comments: OK. Unsure if digital or optical. Not advertised as digital.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: approximately 36 feet in scope mode. Scope print. Appears to have been filmed in Super35.

The Bachelor
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Right edge of image lacked several inches touching right edge of screen in places. (-2)
- Audio comments: Digital (no identifying trailer played). Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 46 feet. Screen width in flat mode: 32 feet. Flat film. Movable side masking appeared to be in a state of disrepair and seemed to be manually fastened in flat position; the curtains sagged and the rope was visible. This showing had some obnoxious early teens (13-14), and it was good to see an usher say something to one group that was unruly. Someone had a laser pointer which occasionally made a little red dot on the screen.

The Story of Us
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: One of the digital formats. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 49 feet. Screen width: 30 feet in flat mode. Side adjustable masking. This was my first movie in one of these newly-constructed auditoriums. One thing that impressed me was that two ushers came in to check the exit doors which are both at the front, one at the left, and one at the right. The ushers walked down the left and right sides in sync, and left the auditorium in sync. The symmetry of it was neat. An amusing thing occurred during this movie: When the ladies sitting at the restaurant table began talking about the roles and properties of the sex organs (the penis being the thruster, the vagina needing to be relaxed, etc.), a group of 4 (2 parents and 2 children) got up and left, since they were dumb enough to take their children to this movie. Hilarious! This movie is one of the only ones that was very funny and very sad at the same time. There was one scene where I had a tear in my eyes from sadness, but I was laughing at the same time.

- Audio comments: Optical. OK.

Superstar
- Grade: -4 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Both the top and right edges had significant fading due to projector alignment or aperture plate alignment problems. (-4)
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet, screen width: 26 feet (dimensions never change for flat/scope; no adjustable masking, 1.85:1 shape). Flat film. Nobody took tickets for this movie until 8 minutes before the start of the show. This auditorium still had regular seating and optical sound.

Election
- Grade: -12 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: This is another fine example of the unprofessional practice of showing scope (2.39:1) films on an unadjustable flat (1.85:1) sized screen, causing nearly a fourth of the image to be chopped off on the sides. (see facility deduction in final ratings). Titles were cropped on previews, and the cropping was very obvious in some scenes of this movie. Left edge had a 6-inch-wide strip that was lower in brightness than the rest of the picture. (-2)
- Audio comments: Optical. Most of the sound, and nearly all of the dialogue, came from the surround speakers instead of the speakers behind the screen, which took me some time to get used to. (-10) I'm certain this movie was not intended to be presented with the sound this way, but if I find out otherwise (when the movie comes out on DVD, or if I see in another theatre later on), I'll take away this deduction.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 26 feet (unadjustable, fixed-sized, no movable masking at top or bottom). This was the only theatre in the Huntsville/Decatur area showing this movie. The movie appeared to be filmed in Super35 (very grainy, and out-of-focus points of light were circular), and was definitely a scope print (2x1 elliptical reel cue change marks)

The Out-of-Towners
- Grade: -4 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Right edge faded. (-2). Bottom edge faded and did not reach bottom edge of screen. (-2).
- Audio comments: Digital (either DTS or Dolby Digital). No identifying trailer was played. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width was 46 feet, screen was 32 feet for flat film. Side masking appeared to be in a state of disrepair. This print looked very grainy (not the theatre's fault).

Prince of Egypt
- Grade: -11 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: The image did not reach the left, bottom, or right edges, and faded out several inches from each edge. Masking appeared to be in a state of disrepair, which is the probable cause of the left and right edge problems. (-6). Lamp brightness fluctuated every few seconds throughout the movie. (-5)
- Audio comments: Dolby Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 46 feet. Image width was difficult to determine due to masking being messed up and everything being out of whack. This was a flat film. There was a really obnoxious, very young kid with the group sitting to the left of me in my row that had to make noises or talk during nearly every scene.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent. The masking mechanism appeared to be in a state of disrepair, like it was on August 16, 1998, and appeared to be manually fixed into its proper position. The image filled the screen just fine, though. A movie trailer (The Faculty) was a flat print showed at the scope setting, stretching everything horizontally by a factor of 2. (-1)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 46 feet. Screen width (scope): 40 feet. This was a scope film, filmed with an anamorphic lens. Nobody was taking tickets to let us go back into the auditorium until 10 minutes before the start of the movie.

54
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Image went beyond left black masking onto blue curtain. (-2)
- Audio comments: Optical. OK. At first, everyone thought there was a problem with the sound system because brief bursts of static appeared to be coming from the right front and surround channels, but I figured out that the sound system was incapable of producing some of the noises we were hearing, and determined that there was a fireworks show going on at the stadium behind the theatre. Of course, this was not the theatre's fault.
- Other comments: Audtorium width 40 feet, Screen width (for flat film) 29 feet. This screen appeared to have movable side masking.

The Avengers
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Seemed slightly out of focus. I found out that this effect was due to filtering during filming, and was intentional. I had previously deducted 2 points, but since this was not the theatre's fault, I took away the deduction.
- Audio comments: DTS. OK.
- Other comments: Audtorium width 46 feet, Screen width (for flat film) 32 feet. Masking was broken, and the rope or chain could be seen hanging from the top curtain. Masking appeared to be fastened up in the flat setting. During the movie, it looked fine. The curtains were sagging a lot to the left and right of the screen.

Good Burger
- Grade: -5 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Wrong aspect ratio. Should have been 2.39:1, but was shown at 1.85:1, losing 21 percent of image. (see facility deduction in final rating). Note: I have not been able to verify the aspect ratio of this movie. I say it was scope because the film became misframed during the credits and the frame division was visible, and it looked like a scope print because there was practically no space between adjacent frames. Of course, I could be wrong, and if I find out I'm wrong, I'll delete these comments.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Movie started 20 minutes late. This was the day of the Regal takeover of Cobb. Everything was chaos at the theatre that day. People had to wait outside the auditorium for the previous showing to let out. (-5)
