Regal River Oaks Cinema 8, Decatur
Gold Projection Quality Award 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003
This is the only Regal theatre in the Huntsville-Decatur area that
was actually built by Regal. It opened on Wednesday, July 3, 1991
with the name "River Oaks Mall 8".
Click here to see the movies that played on
this theatre's opening day.
Located adjacent to the Colonial Mall in Decatur on Alabama Highway 67,
this theatre has 8 auditoriums, one of which is 52 feet wide (auditorium 6),
with the
other 7 being 28 feet wide. The largest auditorium has movable side
masking which resizes the screen from a 40-foot width for scope to a 30-foot
width for flat and was the first auditorium equipped with DTS sound.
The other 7 auditoriums have screens
from 25 to 27 feet wide with movable top masking which
moves vertically to resize the screen properly for flat or scope movies.
Four of these smaller auditoriums (1, 2, 3, and 4) have standard optical
surround audio.
Four of the auditoriums (numbers 5, 6, 7, and 8)
have DTS sound systems. DTS was installed in auditoriums 5, 7, and 8 during
May of 2001. This theatre uses Simplex projectors.
All movies in this theatre are shown in the correct aspect ratio.
Standard seating. Seats have cup holders.
This theatre is currently the best when it comes to projection quality and
consistency. This theatre's projection quality and consistency ratings
are practically impossible to beat. This theatre is very well managed, and
has an outstanding staff.
The auditoriums are usually "walked" twice during each movie to check
presentation quality, which I have witnessed many times. Sometimes,
noticeable projection
problems are caught and fixed during the previews before the movie actually
starts. The manager does an exceptional job of cracking down on presentation
quality problems and fixing them, and keeps the projection equipment running
smoothly. It definitely shows. A policeman that is often in the theatre
told me that the manager is a perfectionist, and based on my experiences, and
on my conversations with the manager and members of the staff (current and
former), I believe it. No theatre has perfect projection quality all of the
time, but this
one is bound to be as good as any theatre anywhere.
The only improvements I could recommend for this location are stadium
seating and digital sound in all auditoriums. The projection quality is
so good that improving it would be extremely difficult.
Here are some reasons why this theatre has made such a positive impression
on me (in no particular order):
- Aperture plates and projector aim are kept set for the masking to provide
nice non-faded, sharp image edges without spillage onto the drapes outside the
black portion of the masking. No theatre gets this perfect all of the time,
but this theatre has been the best about it.
- There is rarely any noticeable shutter ghosting in the projected images.
- Images are always very well focused.
- The optics (lenses, port windows) are kept clean to provide the best
possible contrast without light diffusion caused by dirty optics. This
helps contrast and color quality.
- Images are of sufficient brightness to provide good contrast and color
quality.
- Projector lamp brightness is steady and flicker free. This is a sign
that lamps are replaced before they exhibit annoying brightness fluctuations
(bright to dim every few seconds) during movies.
- There is seldom any significant accumulation of dirt at splice points.
- Splices are typically so well done that if it weren't for the reel change
cue marks, I would not notice them.
- I have rarely heard the DTS audio cut out or default to optical during a
presentation in the DTS auditoriums (auditoriums 5, 6, 7, and 8). It has happened once, on Star Wars Episode II, 2002/05/20, due to a defective DTS time code on a print, causing a one to two minute portion to play in analog, which was not the fault of the theatre.
- I have never seen an out-of-frame splice at this theatre.
- Prints are typically very clean looking and in good condition, and lack
the dirt, scratches, and other signs of damage often seen in other theatres.
This means that films are handled properly and carefully, and the projectors
are kept clean and in proper working order.
- The trailers are often the pieces of film that show the most damage, but
at this theatre, they're typically in perfect condition as well, and are not
scratched, dirty, or damaged.
- Framing errors are rare here.
- When the projector is started, the image is already correctly framed
nearly every time, and no framing adjustment is necessary. This means that
the projectionist has been taught to thread in frame.
- The theatre is always very clean.
- Auditoriums are "walked" twice during presentations to check for problems.
- Audio volume has always been at an ideal level. I have never noticed a
presentation being too loud or too soft.
- The sound systems in the auditoriums that have had standard optical
Dolby Stereo audio have been kept in such good condition that the lack of
digital sound has not been as apparent as it is in other theatres that lack
digital sound. (Three of these auditoriums now have DTS.)
- I've never noticed an exit sign being too bright or throwing too much light
onto a screen in any auditorium here.
- The manager does a good job of taking care of people who are disruptive
or who do illegal things. Examples: cell-phone users in the theatres,
cigarette smokers who smoke in the theatres.
- I feel that the security is very good in this theatre. In fact, there is
usually always a policeman in the lobby, and I have seen policemen walk into
the auditoriums when I have been watching a movie. A rather easy measure of
a theatre's security is how often I can buy my ticket, see the movie, and
leave the theatre with an untorn ticket. This theatre is the only one at
which I have never been able to leave with an untorn ticket.
- The management and staff have always been very professional and friendly.
To be fair, here are some of the few negative things I have noticed. Keep
in mind that any such list made for any other theatre would be much longer
than this:
- Some of the auditoriums here have one aisle up the center of the theatre,
which takes out the middle seats, leaving seats on the sides of the aisle to
the walls. These auditoriums do not have staggered seating, and do not have as
much slope as auditorium 6 does. These would be greatly improved by
conversion to stadium seating.
- There is only one large auditorium here (auditorium 6) that is 52 feet
wide. All other 7 auditoriums are no more than 28 feet wide. The small
width of these auditoriums forces the use of top masking instead of side
masking.
- I would like to eventually see stadium seating and digital sound added
to all auditoriums here. While the facility is satisfactory, it is definitely
dated in some ways.
- The seats are not very comfortable for long movies.
It should be clear that this theatre is the best when it comes to getting
a high-quality image on the screen. The few negatives here are far outweighed
by the positives. Keep in mind that some of the positive statements I made
in the above listing can only be made for this theatre in the Huntville-Decatur
area. Note that the lowest score for a movie presentation here has been -5,
and that this theatre has achieved ratings of -1.0 and better in the past.
No other theatre comes close to this level of quality of operations.

Bad Santa
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.7111)
- Image comments: Perfect.
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 26 feet. Adjustable top masking. Flat film. This attendance set a new record for the number of commercials I saw before the previews. 13 commercials were shown (10 was the previous record for number of commercials). 7 minutes of the 20 minutes of preshow material was commericals rather than previews. This is a disturbing trend. Someone is definitely working overtime for Regal in Colorado to hurt the moviegoing experience at Regal theatres.

Duplex
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.6708)
- Image comments: Movie and all preview material had a wiggly vertical scratch roughly 0.2 screen widths from the left side. (-2) My eyes were drawn to it in some of the brighter scenes.
- Audio comments: Excellent. I was unsure if hearing digital or analog. The analog sound systems here are so good that sometimes it is hard to tell the difference in digital and analog for dialogue-driven movies like this one.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 27 feet. Screen width: 25 feet. Adjustable top masking. Flat film. This attendance set a new record for the number of commercials I saw before the previews. 10 commercials were shown (I think 4 was the previous record for number of commercials), then 5 movie previews were shown before the movie. Previews are great (they educate me on what movies are coming in the future so I'll know what I might want to come back to see), but commercials provide nothing useful. A trailer about piracy (which I've seen too many times), the Marines, a commercial for some TV show (video resolution blown up to film), 3 Coke commericals, Fandango, a jeans commercial where a stunt guy repeated gets thrown off a car into a parking meter pole -- in the crotch, and 3 more that I can't remember off the top of my head. I don't see that this is going to make more people want to go to the movie theatre.

- Other comments: Auditorium width: 29 feet, screen width: 26 feet (constant width system, top masking). Scope print, appeared to be filmed in super35.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Beautiful.
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 52 feet, screen width (scope mode): 40 feet. Filmed with anamorphic attachment, scope print, very grain free. This movie really shows how great 35mm film can look in a well-setup environment.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent. This the best presentation of this movie that I've seen. The focus was far better than any previous showing I've attended, which really helped to make the computer-generated imagery appear more real. There was a very small faded area on the bottom of the left edge, but since the image quality was superior (in clarity and focus) to other presentations I've seen of this film, I have decided not to deduct a point for it.
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width 52 feet, screen width 40 feet in scope mode. This showing was at least two-thirds full. This is the only movie I've ever seen three nights in a row! The manager mentioned that he could not properly focus this print when he first got it, and got a tech person to come in and make some sort of adjustment to the projector.

My Favorite Martian
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent. Very slight fading on left side of bottom edge. (-1)
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 27 feet; screen width: 26 feet (constant width system). Flat film. I was the only person in the auditorium. At one point, the projectionist looked into the theatre, didn't see me, and thinking nobody was in there, shut off the projector lamp (common practice to extend lamp life by not running it when nobody is watching a movie). I went to the lobby and told them and they had it back on in a few seconds. (-2) Both the projectionist and the manager were very apologetic about it and the manager offered me a free pass, which I didn't feel I should take.

Office Space
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Perfect. I was impressed that a lady walked in and checked the projection during the previews, resulting in a very minor (barely noticeable) framing error (6 inches too high on screen) being corrected before the movie started.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width 28 feet; screen width 25 feet (constant width system). Flat film.

Wizard of Oz
- Grade: -4 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: During first 10 minutes, film was misframed so that approximately one foot of black was showing at the bottom of the screen, which was quite distracting. (-4) It was more distracting that it normally would be due to the abmormal presentation of this movie. This movie was originally filmed in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio, and since few theatres have the correct aperture plates, lenses, and masking to show the original Academy-style prints properly, the prints were made by centering the 1.37:1 image in the 1.85 image area, resulting in a 1.37:1 square printed in the center of the image area, utilizing only about 40 percent of the entire image area on the film.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width 28 feet; screen width 25 feet, image width 20 feet.

Lost in Space
- Grade: -5 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Very slightly misframed, causing 2 to 4 inches of the bottom of the frame to be visible at the top of the screen (scope print), during the previews and entire movie, which was distracting in some scenes. Scope prints give practically no leeway for misframing. (-5) Otherwise, everything was excellent.
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.

The Apostle
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent. The edges were not bad, but the right and bottom edges faded out a little before reaching the edges of the screen. The left edge of the image, at the bottom left, did not quite reach the left edge of the screen. (-2)
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Flat film.

As Good As It Gets
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Perfect. To start with, during the previews, the bottom edge was fuzzy. Between two of the previews, the projector was stopped for no more than 30 seconds and the problem was fixed. I was impressed that the projectionist stopped the projector cleanly between two of the previews (nothing was missed) to fix this very minor image defect.

Good Will Hunting
- Grade: -5 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Perfect.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK. Intermission music was not turned down completely after the movie started and was faintly audible during quiet scenes of the movie. It was slightly noticeable during the quieter scenes. (-2)
- Other comments: Projector was started 14 minutes late. The auditorium was available on time, though, so there was no wait to go in. (-1) Projector was shut off before credits finished running. The credits of this movie were not plain black-background credits. (-2) The manager mentioned that there was a problem earlier in this auditorium and a technician had been in there.
