The gd 1.2 package was used to create the GIF files directly from within a C program. This library was developed by the Quest Protein Database Center, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, and is a very convenient way to create GIF files without having to draw images on a graphics display first, meaning that "batch" jobs may create gif files.
